"Overpowering"?
Rookie question. I read references to certain backing materials or thicknesses "overpowering" core or belly material, and vice versa. Can someone help me understand what this means and how to avoid...

as i understood that term, it means that the backing is so good in tension that it outweighs the resistance the belly can offer. i think of a bending limb as an equilibrium of elongating the back and...

Agreed Patrick. Gekitsku, it may be theory but it's correct. The goal is always to try to get all of the material working as best as it can, whatever that work is. The theory also applies to self...

Thanks, Mick777Oz. Hadn't occurred to me that the same principle applied to self bows, but of course it would. So much to learn...

One of the finer points is that this ratio of compression and tension strength is affected by the MC of the wood, hence you can view it like all woods have an optimal rectangular cross section, but if...

I wouldn't really apply that principle to selfbows the same way. most are not going to contain heart and sapwood and I would say that most typical selfbow woods are somewhat more balanced in strength.

This is a nice explanation:"as i understood that term, it means that the backing is so good in tension that it outweighs the resistance the belly can offer. i think of a bending limb as an equilibrium...
